The eX+ version adds an epilogue that ties some plot holes from the original game, adds a lot more scenes and two more playable characters, so this is definitely the definitive version to play. Many of the early titles in this series were PC games released for the PC-88, PC-98, MSX, MSX2, and other early Japanese PC platforms, while some were later ported to video game consoles. Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is kind of a mix between Falcoms Trails and Ys series for worldbuilding and combat, and Atlus Persona for school/social simulation. The series encompasses several different genres, which include action role-playing, action-adventure, platform-adventure, open world, turn-based role-playing, and real-time strategy. Part of the reason is due to the game’s 3D models lacking the charm present in The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky’s pre-rendered sprites and Gurumin’s cel-shaded models since they look rough. The title’s dungeon tracks that elevate to match the intense feeling many people go through while they do their best to push forward.įor a title that originally came out in 2005, Xanadu Next’s look is inferior to Falcom’s previous stuff that came out within that time range, such as the original PC version of Ys: The Oath in Felghana. ![]() For example, “Harlech,” the theme that plays in the main town, makes the players feel relieved and it shares some similarities with Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim’s “The Pirate Ship” since they both feature soothing guitar beats. ![]() While Xanadu Next’s music isn’t similar to the usual upbeat tunes found in many Falcom titles, the slow songs and orchestrated tracks suit its environment nicely. This also applies to the boss battles since you’ll have to take advantage of their openings. In some cases, one wrong move could result in losing one’s life. I went into Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE Encore relatively blind. Before then, it's largely a tropey high school thing. NEO: The World Ends with You is a sequel that comes well. If Falcom’s Ys series focuses on being strategically aggressive, Xanadu Next is all about being defensive while you look for the right moment to attack. Like the Trails games, though, it doesn't actually start kicking into high gear until really, really late. Each time that I came across a new item, I felt a sense of joy since it brought me closer to finding the Dragon Slayer.Ĭombat in this adventure requires a bit of planning as the game rewards players for hitting their opponent from behind, instead of rushing in with a sword like a maniac. You’ll also come across various tools to improve your exploration and puzzle skills in a similar manner that the Zelda, Metroid, and the Iga Castlevania titles aid you in getting to areas you couldn’t get to before. Despite this system creating a few limits for those who want more freedom in allocating their character stats, the wide variety of skills makes up for it.Īside from getting different skills, Xanadu Next provides players with a Guardian system where you equip special cards that can affect your skills, such as discounts at the shops and specific stat boosts. Since your character’s required experience to level up is decreased when you use this option, it’s convenient that people can regain their original status faster than before. If you happen to mess up with your distribution, you have the ability to lose a level so you can allocate them better. While you have the freedom to customize your knight’s traits after leveling up, the game‘s arsenal of weapons and gear almost force people to follow a specific path. Seeing that Xanadu Next’s leveling system requires people to go to a church to increase their stats, Falcom made a smart move in ensuring that they can return home with a teleportation item. At the same time, it makes it easy to stock up on the important things they’ll need for each trial. Thankfully, Xanadu Next’s ability to let players move between different points easily prevents this format from getting old. When you have a game that revolves around the players having to constantly stock up on keys to move through each area, there needs to be a system in place to keep things fresh. Which leads into my next issue, as I feel the guns are unbalanced. I played the game on the normal mode, but I’ve been able to blast through the campaign with one gun and have only died a handful of times. ![]() My first issue with Doom 3 is that the difficulties feel unbalanced. So overall there’s a solid 10-20 hours of content in the game, depending on how fast you play and if you’re into the collectibles.īefore I share some of my issues with the game, I have to say that most of my issues I’m about to say and have said already can be said about all versions of Doom 3 so I’ll discuss issues relating to the VR version after I talk about the general issues with Doom 3 as a game. While it has some creepy aspects, I found the game to be exciting and scary in a fun way throughout the game.ĭoom 3: VR Edition contains the full game, as well as the two DLC expansions that released after the original game. I found that after playing for a while, you get used to how they try to scare you if you’re not into horror games, I wouldn’t necessarily stay away from Doom 3. Now as for the horror aspects of the game I mentioned earlier, Doom 3 has a lot of jump scares, monsters and demons, and dark areas in the game. ![]() The DualShock 4 works just fine, but I much prefer the aim controller, it’s a must for this game and works extremely well! The game supports both the aim controller and the DualShock 4. I completely understand the need to break up the gameplay from getting repetitive, but these moments could’ve been done better. The fast-paced shooting is broken up by the occasional puzzle or by having to backtrack, which honestly killed the excitement. You’ll spend most of the game making your way through a station on mars, as you collect new weapons, open new routes, and find things such as clips, health stations, armor, or files that add to the plot of the game. ![]() While it takes some time to get going, Doom 3 turns into an exciting fast-paced shooting game. It follows a similar plot as games such as Half-Life-you’re having an ordinary day in some sort of station, something goes wrong, you shoot some bad guys, and figure out how to escape or stop the problem-so it’s nothing too special and is really just there to set up the gameplay.Īs for the gameplay, it mainly consists of running, gunning, and the occasional puzzle-solving. But from what I’ve heard, Doom 3 is quite different than the other Doom games, as it focuses more on horror and has a greater focus on the story.Īnd to briefly touch upon the story, it’s nothing special. I know little about the series, and this is my first real experience with any of the Doom games. Which is something I’m a fan of, as I love these type of visuals, but if you’re looking for something more realistic, or are hoping for a more drastic change to the game, then that could be a drawback for you.īefore getting further into the details of the game, I must mention that I’m far from a Doom expert. This version still maintains the classic feel of the original. ![]() This specific version of Doom 3 is a remaster of the original, as it adds updated textures, visual effects, and sound effects to the game! These improvements are nice, but it’s not at the point where it feels like a brand new game. And now after a few short weeks, we have it in our hands so, is Doom 3: VR Edition any good?ĭoom 3: VR Edition brings the classic game from 2004 and adds a new perspective to it with VR. But it still came as a shock when Doom 3 was announced at the start of March. As their large range of titles can be experienced in a new way with Virtual Reality. And even if that just means reselling their older games, I’ve always looked forward to what they have to share in the VR scene. From Skyrim VR to Doom VFR and Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, Bethesda has shown that they believe in VR. Over the past few years, we’ve received several VR titles from Bethesda. Black must be placed into the active players’ board. The card goes onto the matching players’ board except for black. It will be one of the main four player colors or black. After that is complete reveal a monster card. Then check to see if any monsters have an action to trigger. If yes, they suffer a specific penalty listed on their board. First, the active player will check to see if their board is overrun or not. The turn sequence in Last Bastion has three phases. On the edge of the tiles are the walls where combat can take place. Each of these spaces are spots players can move into and around. These abilities range from healing a fallen player to making a certain color monster weaker to removing nasty bastion tokens. The castle is made up of a three by three grid of tiles each with a helpful ability. Each player can choose one of eight heroes, each with a unique ability designed to help the cause. In Last Bastion you are a group of warriors tasked with defending the castle from an unrelenting horde of monsters. Defend Against the Hordes in Last Bastion: Board Game Review We have had an absolute blast and I keep browsing this sub looking for people to talk to about it because while I haven't played others in the genre I am enthralled with the gameplay and can't wait to get back to playing.įrom the guy that now owns 2 board games I give it 5/5 stars.Note: Published by Repos Production distributed by Asmodee North America. I have zero experience playing co-op board games outside of this, but it is easily the best $43 I've spent in recent memory. The 8 characters are all strong and helps create an identity to each player involved. Each turn takes enough time to be entertaining without making everyone sit around bored and waiting. The artwork on the cards meshes well with the motif and overall feel for the game resulting in some solid immersion. The miniatures are pretty and the board itself makes to be a fantastic piece that is fun to gather around. While it seems overwhelming its really just made up of simple steps that result into each turn so it's fairly easy to understand the flow of the game. We have played around 6 full playthroughs so far and I'm absolutely thrilled with the game. Then I saw one list that had a link to Last Bastion as the spiritual successor to Ghost Stories and the eggnogs took over and I ordered it on the spot. I kept seeing Ghost Stories and knew my daughter would love the theme since she is a few years away from being full blown emo but they wouldn't be keen on a game we always lose at. I looked over list after list trying to find something that looked appealing enough and not super overwhelming. The problem was it was competitive and my son isn't a good winner or loser so it'd still be a little testy at times.įast forward to this Christmas and I wanted to get us another game but thought maybe a cooperative game would be a nice change of pace over the cutthroat King of Tokyo. We've played maybe 100 rounds over the years together and with other family.
